Organize an online seminar

nanoGe is eager to promote the organization of online seminars. Do you have a topic? It's very easy to lauch a meetup! Just describe the topic, decide a few speakers, and fill the form.

Most important: We wish to encourage participation of both junior and senior researchers, please propose interesting research directions

Quantify Berlin has recently been found by a group of researchers from Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin. We have integrated our expertise on radiative loss analysis of direct semiconductors, such as metal-halide perovskites, into an extremely compact, versatile but still easy-to-use measurement system. The setup swiftly quantifies absolute photon fluxes from electro- and photoluminescence of semiconductor layers, layer stacks or complete devices with a broad range of selectable excitation conditions. The included, user-friendly software not only records the desired luminescence spectra, but also directly calculates relevant physical parameters of the investigated sample, such as the luminescence quantum yield (EL/PLQY) or the quasi-Fermi level splitting in the absorber. A system that combines all these characterization possibilities has been lacking on the market so far.

nanoGe Online Meetup

The online meetup Advances and Challenges in Tin Halide ASnX3 Perovskites (TinPero) took place on June 23rd 2020.

Contents

This e-symposium covered tin halide perovskites (ASnX3), one of the most promising new generation photovoltaic materials, as they hold excellent properties such as a close-to ideal bandgap and potential in all-perovskite tandem solar cells. Also, they show lower environmental toxicity in comparison to the predominant lead-based perovskites. Although tin halide perovskites are theoretically expected to overcome lead-based perovskites in terms of absolute power conversion efficiency, they still face many challenges involving processing conditions, the stability of Sn(II) oxidation state and suitability of contact layers.

In this online conference, we discussed the latest strategies used to tackle the problems affecting the efficiency and stability of tin halide ASnX3 perovskites. The conference had a particular interest in the different ways to prevent the Sn(II) oxidation, such as the use of additives (e.g. SnF2 or hypophosphorous acid) or varying the processing conditions. Similarly, the relevance of ASnX3 perovskite composition and properties of contact layers will also be emphasized.

The different topics described above promoted the discussion on unanswered aspects involving tin halide ASnX3 perovskites. While oxidation of Sn(II) is being proven by more and more research groups in the field, the working mechanisms of the additives used for this purpose are not fully understood yet. Also, what are the best strategies to obtain efficient and reproducible Sn-based perovskites? Are 2D materials the only way to achieve these goals? What implications has changing the composition in ASnX3 perovskites, and how does doping affect? Overall, this conference aims to bridge the latest advances achieved in the field with the questions so far unexplored, while keeping an eye on future challenges that tin halide perovskites will face in the near term.
