This symposium invites contributions reporting progress in research and technology of quantum dots (QDs) with a particular focus on application-relevance. Application-relevance includes aspects such as compliance with hazardous substance regulations (RoHS), improved opto-electronic properties and reliability, and exploration of QD applications. The symposium will cover fundamental insights in the chemistry and physics of RoHS compliant QDs, for example, made of III-V, Zn-based II-VI or chalcopyrite materials, and application-development using these materials. Specific topics include, but are not limited to, questions of QD synthesis, surface chemistry, electronic structure and optical properties, and applications of III-V QDs in display, lighting, lasing, and infrared imaging. Special attention will go to the relation between QD properties and performance, both at material and device level, and approached from an experimental and computational perspective.

Prof. Z. Hens received his PhD in applied physics from Ghent University in 2000, worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Utrecht University and was appointed professor at the Ghent University department of inorganic and physical chemistry in 2002. His research concerns the synthesis, processing and characterization of colloidal nanocrystals.
