We have synthesized a novel series of D–π–A dyes, VCL01, VCL02 and VC70, using indoline as a donor moiety. These dye structures are based on the reference dye LS-11which incorporates thiophene as a π-bridge between the indoline donor and the acceptor. VCL012 incorporates a cyclopentadithiophene unit as the π-bridge while VCL02 incorporates 7,7-dihexyl-2,5-di(thiophen-2-yl)-7H-cyclopenta[1,2-b:4,3-b']dithiophene in its π-bridge. In VC703 a porphyrin core is attached directly to the indoline. In Dye Sensitized Solar Cell devices LS-1, VCL01, VCL02 and VC70 gave efficiencies of 6.23%, 4.81%, 4.80% and 5.59% respectively; after 120 min continuous light soaking the efficiencies were 6.95%, 7.21%, 5.38% and 7.31% respectively. The increase in efficiency is particularly marked for VCL01 and VC70. Increase in device efficiency is attributed to both increases in photocurrent and photovoltage. Device properties were fully characterized using transient absorption, charge extraction and transient photovoltage techniques and indicate the light soaking shifts the TiO2 band and increases device electron lifetime.
