Organic photovoltaic (OPV) technology offers a promising solution for powering the rapidly growing number of autonomous indoor IoT devices and low-power sensors operating under artificial light. However, beyond device performance, the transition from laboratory-scale development to industrial manufacturing remains a major challenge, particularly for small, customized photovoltaic devices designed for integration into connected objects.
In this presentation, we will present Dracula Technologies’ approach to the industrialization of indoor OPV modules based on inkjet printing technology. Inkjet printing provides significant advantages for the manufacturing of small and customized photovoltaic devices, including high design flexibility, digital patterning, precise material deposition, rapid design changes and the ability to manufacture different geometries without requiring dedicated tooling. These capabilities are particularly relevant for indoor applications, where photovoltaic devices must often be adapted to the available space and integrated directly into compact electronic systems.
We will describe our development path from laboratory-scale OPV devices towards pilot manufacturing and the ongoing transition to mass production. Particular attention will be given to the manufacturing architecture, process scalability, printing of the different functional layers, process control, yield improvement and reproducibility at larger production volumes.
Our industrial platform is designed to manufacture customized OPV cells and modules optimized for low-light environments, targeting applications such as autonomous IoT devices, wireless sensors and smart connected objects. We will also discuss the main manufacturing challenges encountered during scale-up and the strategies implemented to achieve a reliable and reproducible industrial process.
This work demonstrates how inkjet-printed OPV can move beyond laboratory-scale demonstrations towards a scalable manufacturing technology capable of addressing the growing demand for compact, customized and mass-produced indoor energy harvesting solutions
