An ionic liquid (IL) incorporated in a quasi-solid-state electrolyte (ILQSE) is prepared using poly (ethylene glycol dimethacrylayte) (PEGDMA) for high-temperature application of secondary batteries. The unique properties of ILs include nonflammability, negligible vapor pressure, wider electrochemical potential window, chemical stability, and thermal stability. Although PEGDMA becomes soft with the addition of IL for improving ionic conductivity, it still shows a rigid property to be used as an exterior. The prepared ILQSE displayed remarkable thermal stability above 100 ℃ when IL was incorporated in cross-linked PEGDMA. The secondary batteries were prepared with carbon electrodes and ILQSE as electrolyte and rigid-exterior. A specific energy density of 10.46 W h kg-1 was achieved and retention ratio of about 83% was observed after 1,000 cycles at 10 mA cm2 at high temperature. The ILQSE shows potential for utilization in the high-temperature operation of secondary batteries through the electrolyte wrapping around the electrode as rigid-exterior.
