The urgent need to develop sustainable catalytic routes for CO₂ valorization has driven growing interest in hybrid catalytic systems. Among them, photothermocatalysis stands out as a particularly promising strategy, merging the high efficiency of thermocatalysis with the green and selective nature of photocatalysis. This synergy enables enhanced catalytic performance and substantial energy savings compared to conventional single-mode approaches.

This lecture will explore the potential of solar photothermo-catalysis for the conversion of CO₂ into solar fuels using noble metal-free catalysts. Special emphasis will be given to CeO₂- and CuO-based phyllosilicates and hybrid hydrotalcite-derived systems exhibiting coupled redox and photoactive features. Furthermore, An innovative integrated process will be presented, in which CO₂ is generated from the catalytic oxidation of VOCs and subsequently transformed into solar fuels, converting air pollutants into valuable products. Finally, the different operational modes—thermo-assisted, photo-assisted, photo-driven, and photothermo-co-catalysis will be discussed, outlining the future perspectives of this emerging field.
